Root Canal Treatment and Retreatment
When the nerve of a tooth becomes infected, you will need a root canal treatment (also known as endodontic treatment), in order to save your tooth. It is easy to figure out whether you have an infected tooth in your mouth or not. The common signs that are associated with an infected tooth include a bad taste in the mouth, pain, swelling, sensitivity to hot and cold foods, and pain while biting. If you suffer from any of these symptoms, you should visit our dental office at Vacaville, CA as soon as possible.
In order to get to the infected pulp, we will make an opening through the top of your tooth. Then the entire infected tissue is cleaned out with a dental file. We would also shape the canals in order to put filling material effectively. An X-ray will be used to determine whether the entire infected pulp has been effectively removed from your tooth. A crown covering may be placed over the tooth in order to protect it after the treatment.
Root Canal Retreatment
With proper care, a tooth treated using root canal therapy could last a lifetime. However, in some cases, endodontic treatment may fail and would need to be redone for a variety of reasons. Some of them include:
- Leakage of bacteria into the canal post treatment
- Fracture in the tooth
- Remaining infected tissue
- Canals that were curved or narrow and were left untreated
- Complicated anatomy of the canal which was undetected
Root canal retreatment is performed to fix the problem and aid the healing of the tooth. During the procedure, the tooth is opened up, and the old filling is removed. The infected and decayed tissues are cleaned and new fillings are placed. Once the tooth has healed, it is covered with a crown.
